Judging

A Pokémon can't switch, and Baton Pass, Roar, and Whirlwind will always fail. When the match is undecided by the end of the third round, the result is judged. For each category, the Pokémon with the highest rating earns two judging points; in case of a tie, each Pokémon earns 1 judging point.

Due to the nature of judging, battles in the Battle Arena are single battles only.

Mind

To determine the Mind rating, certain attacks chosen for use by Pokémon are given points, as shown here.

  • If the move is Protect, Detect, Endure, or Fake Out, subtract 1 point.
  • If the move is Counter, Mirror Coat, or Bide, add 0 points.
  • For all other moves:
    • If the move has a base damage of 0, add 0 points.
    • If the move has a base damage of 1 or more, add 1 point.

Skill

To determine the Skill rating, add 1 point for each time a Pokémon successfully used an attack and 2 points if the attack was "super effective" against the opponent. Subtract 1 point if the attack was "not very effective" against the opponent, and 2 points for each case that an attack that a Pokémon used fails or misses, except if the opponent protected itself from the move due to Protect or Detect. (This includes moves used by other moves. If Snatch or Magic Coat is used, the ultimate user of the attack being snatched or bounced back is the Pokémon who receives the Skill rating change. The Skill rating is unaffected if the Pokémon is "storing energy" due to Bide. Apparently, if the Pokémon couldn't use Focus Punch because it "lost its focus", this is treated as a success.)

Body

The Body rating for a Pokémon is (((HP remaining at end)*100)/(HP remaining at beginning)). A Pokémon's starting HP is set to its current HP each time a Pokémon on either side becomes active.

Results

The Pokémon with fewer judging points than the opponent is eliminated. In case of a tie, both Pokémon are eliminated. A Pokémon eliminated this way doesn't faint and retains its current HP and status problem, but can't be active in battle again for the rest of the battle. This is important for the purposes of Beat Up and Assist, which depend on which Pokémon in the party are unfainted.
